Robert Mutembei Koome
An advocate of the High Court of Kenya and Managing Partner, KMK Africa Advocates LLP.
Mutembei is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and an accomplished professional in commercial legal practice, due diligence and advisory. He has been sufficiently exposed to high profile cases in commercial law and related constitutional litigation insuperior courts and therefore brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the firm. His knack for excellence, quick turn around times and personalized client service is contagious in the firm. This has often led to happy and loyal clients.
He has successfully represented diverse clients to resolve tax and business contract disputes of a complex nature while preserving the clients’ business continuity. His notable acumen in commercial law and business language is always a value add to clients in the commercial sector, who are happy to get timely legal advice that speaks to their business. This has made him the go-to person for diverse commercial legal services.
He has a wealth of experience in facilitating real estate projects and securities perfection at all levels, drawing from a depth of an end to end understanding of the conveyancing processes in Kenya. This is has made him an ideal transaction advisor for primary mortgage lenders
Mutembei has also cut out a niche in technology law and e-commerce; he is currently researching on legal issues in Financial technology (fintech). He believes that technology continues to shape business practices and therefore legal practitioners must respond to this disruption with the kind of agility that can help businesses to navigate new phases inthe industry successfully. Being a lecturer, Mutembei is also involved in training and mentorship of young lawyers, inpursuit of a passionate desire to recalibrate the ethos of legal practice.

Muriuki Muriungi

Muriuki Muriungi is Partner and Head of the Financial Services Law Department at KMK Africa Advocates LLP, a full-service law firm based in Nairobi, Kenya. His practice focuses on corporate finance; financial regulation including banking and securities regulation; public policy and public finance including taxation issues, privatization, and public private partnerships as well as law and economics.
As a lawyer trained in economics and finance, Muriuki applies economic analysis to law and corporate transactions, while structuring and advising on transactions. As a policy specialist, he has advised and consulted for regulators in the Kenyan financial sector such as the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) and the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) as well as other organizations such as Kenya Bankers Association, Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya, and the World Bank Group/IFC.
Muriuki has previously taught law at the University of Nairobi and the University of Embu. He is an author of various peer reviewed journals and book chapters, and has presented at international policy and academic conferences in the United Kingdom, USA, South Africa, Switzerland and Malawi.
Muriuki received his undergraduate degree (LL.B) and master’s degree in law (LL.M) from the University of Nairobi. He also received a Master of Science in Law and Finance from St. Peter’s College, University of Oxford where he was a Standard Bank Africa Chairman’s Scholar. Currently, he is undertaking his doctoral studies in central banking and climate change.
SELECT WORK EXPERIENCE:
Provided support to the Central Bank of Kenya in preparing a Digest on the emerging jurisprudence on its legal mandates.
Advised on the viability of adopting a Limited Purpose Transaction Bank Accounts for youths below the age of majority with a view to securing approval from the regulator for the banking product, by assessing the regulatory environment and attendant risks.
Undertook a comprehensive review of the policy, legal and regulatory environment of the affordable housing sector in Kenya-A study commissioned by Financial Sector Deepening Kenya.
Advised the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) on consumer protection issues among financial lenders (banks and digital lenders) in Kenya’s financial sector.
Provided technical advice to the Presidential Taskforce on Review of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Part of the team that supported the development of the National Forest Policy 2021 for Kenya-Work commissioned by the Ministry of Environment-Kenya and UNDP.
Part of the team that supported a legislative review of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act 2013 to accord with Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2020 on Wildlife Policy.
Undertaking a study on central banks’ mandate in greening the financial system through a research grant/gift from the Climate Works Foundation, California.
Conducted a countrywide detailed review of national and county policy, legal and institutional framework on water and sanitation in a study commissioned by Centre for Water Security and Cooperation (CWSC), Washington DC.
Part of the team that developed the Kenya Land Governance Assessment Framework Report-A countrywide diagnostic assessment commissioned by the World Bank Group.
Part of the team that developed a new curriculum for Kenya’s admission to the bar, the “Advocates Training Programme (ATP)”-Study commissioned by Council for Legal Education (CLE), Kenya.
Part of the team that conducted an audit of County land and physical planning legislation for constitutionality (for at least 10 counties)-Study commissioned by the County of Governors (CoG) Kenya.
Part of the team conducted research on the regulation of electromagnetic spectrum in Kenya and proposed recommendations on appropriate governance models for the Communications Authority (CA)-Study commissioned by the Ford Foundation.

Advised a fintech client in its the multi-million takeover by a venture capital firm in a transaction that included aspects of both cash payment and allotment of shareholding in the venture capital firm.
Advised a local technology company in its acquisition of shareholding in a global technology and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) giant through a local subsidiary for purposes of specialized service delivery to the local market.
Advised a local technology infrastructure company in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Transaction with the Kenyan government for the development of a multi-billion-shilling data centre within the country intended to offer local cloud services.
Legal Advisor in the setting up of one of the fastest growing fintech company from scratch, structuring of investment agreements with foreign investors, intellectual property advice and general legal compliance.
